History of the Fixturlaser Roll200 Alignment System

The Roll200 system first came on the market in early 1999 and at that time, was the first laser-based instrument for accurate positioning of rolls in web handling operations such as paper mills, steel or aluminium and plastic film plants. The Fixturlaser Roll 200 was developed for the easiest possible access to the positioning of rolls.

The Fixturlaser Roll 200 Alignment System was built on the same technology as the popular Fixturlaser Shaft 100 and 200 shaft alignment systems.

Users of the Fixturlaser Shaft 100 or 200 can still upgrade their systems to a Fixturlaser Roll 200 through the addition of software and hardware fixtures.

Fixturlaser Roll 200 SystemThe resolution of the Fixturlaser Roll 200 Alignment system measurement results is as fine as 1 micron. The system possessed the capacity to align even the largest roll facility, with a memory capable of storing 8 measurements with 50 rolls in each measurement. The Roll 200 Alignment System automatically stored information on position, date and time and enabled individual name labelling of each roll.

The Fixturlaser Roll 200 could utilise an existing datum line, i.e., floor markers, or one of the rolls as its measurement reference. The transmitter is roughly lined up parallel to the reference object. Measurements are made, using the detector on the reference, thereby establishing a calculation base for the roll measurements. The angular prism is set up near the roll to be measured, deflecting the beam alongside the roll to be measured.

Measurements are made on two positions on the roll. All measurements are stored in the system for transfer to a PC or for printing a report on the supplied printer. The results are presented as deviation per inch, deviation per roll length or as an angle.

When all measurements are made the reference can be toggled between any of the measured rolls or the reference line to find the optimal reference to guide the correction. Adjustments are then made with live measurement values guiding the operator towards best possible positioning of the rolls.

The Fixturlaser Roll 200 Alignment System consisted of a display unit, a sweep laser transmitter, a laser detector unit, an angular prism and fixtures and brackets for mounting the equipment. The display unit collected the measurement information from the detector unit and processes the data for presentation on the back-lit touch sensitive screen.

The touch-screen display unit used icons and graphics for easiest possible operation, prompting the user through the process. The ergonomically designed display unit is handheld, powered by standard batteries or an AC adapter. The laser transmitter uses visible red light, has a built in prism for 90 degrees deflection of the beam, a rotating laser turret for sweeping of a laser plane, micrometer screws and built in spirit levels for accurate adjustments.

The angular prism deflects the beam 90 degrees and user an electronic centering detector for accurate setup. The detector unit uses a built-in inclinometer for accurate angular positioning. The fixtures and brackets consists of two datum mark pick-up fixtures for utilisation of existing datum lines, roller brackets for both magnetic and non-magnetic rolls of any size and slide tables for easy setup of the laser transmitter and the angular prism.
